Every time I pick up a Romantasy book (which this book undeniably is), I find myself utterly baffled at the unbelievability of the romance.
It may just be that it’s poorly written (which, again, this book undeniably is), but the characters and their connections feel so forced and unconvincing and bland.
Sybil and Rory are not fun to follow. I don’t believe they’re in love, nor do I care about them at all.

I started this because people on Threads were saying Rachel Gillig is one of the best fantasy authors currently writing, and that this book actually was being mislabeled and isn’t romantasy, but is instead plain old fantasy with a romance subplot.
So far, I think Gillig is not a very skilled writer and it is reading VERY much like Romantasy to me, but I shall keep y’all updated.

Completely agree that the romance in this is bland and unconvincing. I literally could not understand what other people were seeing. That said, I don’t consider this a romantasy for that reason because I did enjoy the other aspects of the book well enough and it didn’t feel like the romance was the main point of the story

Absolutely agreed. I couldn't even get myself to continue 15% of this book because of how surface-level and insta-lust the romance was. Most fantasy books are better off with little romance so readers can anticipate the few moments between the main character and the love interests
The romance in this book is non existence
