I’m enjoying this medieval HR. For an HR novel from the ’80s, it’s refreshing to read a heroine who isn’t the usual shrewish, ill-tempered, or stupid heroine. She’s strong-willed yet level-headed, and isn’t ruled by her emotions. The hero, too, isn’t needlessly cruel or abusive just for the sake of it, as was common in ’70s and ’80s HR. Best of all, the characterization is remarkably consistent.

Yes, it’s refreshing to read a historical romance where the main characters aren’t foolishly and needlessly bickering or constantly shouting at each other. There’s no frustrating misunderstanding driving the plot, either. The characters are sensible, likable, and genuinely endearing, which made their relationship all the more enjoyable to read.
