Nothing is happening in this book. The same shit over and over. It's like Kuang shoved every single little idea she had about what a chinese american girl might experience in taiwan. Neither she nor her editors could bear to part with even one of Kuang's ~ingenious~ insights. So fucking miserable.

it's fine ig. i mean, it's still kinda early in the story, but it is concerning that it's 20% of the book and there's no set up for any sort of plot at all. it's just her doing a bunch of tourist stuff and chinese lessons, which does provide characterization of the MC, but the issue is that it drags on for way too long. We don't need to see every single tourist destination and food stall to get the idea. RF Kuang does tend to ramble like this, and in some works that could serve a purpose, but here it would be better to have a smaller yet more impactful amount of scenes. Less is more, a lot of the time.
