I think our protag is in his core a good person. But the destitute circumstances of his environment and the fact that he had to quit his studies have been weighing heavily on his soul.

Having his mother describe him as "all their hopes and aspirations rolled into one" or whatever it was exactly, make me believe he probably put an incredible amount of pressure on himself for the sake of his family.
