started reading on 8/26 and it’s so crazy. it’s for my women writers class. i think im flatlining my understanding of the novel but it already feels so deep to me, i just don’t know how to express that in class. offred is such a character that desires and aspires to live her life as she wants it to, but this govt system has brainwashed her and other women to repress these feelings. she’s a rebel in disguise.

i think the most sad part about reading this book is how these things don’t seem far off and that i can imagine them occurring. it’s chilling and frightening. i hate reading.

there was so much grapple about the protagonist: i hate calling her offred. she wasn’t very likeable and the other characters weren’t either, but i also think that’s the point as well. the feminists, the neutrals, and the nons i could empathize to certain degrees, but atwood makes them all with their faults. they are all doing what they think is best to survive in this gov.

well that was insane. 9/7 that ending made me so sad it was so abrupt, and we do not know her fate. the historical notes pissed me off too because all of a sudden a man is talking??? like please get off the pages. please stop talking. made me think about how we can look at history and undermine those experiences.
