Just read the first half of The Monkey, where Hal encounters a dreadful toy monkey from his past.

This is a story that is told through flashbacks, with the present day stuff being the interludes, yet it does paint a darkly truthful picture of a childhood in ruins. I’m pretty sure the drama at play isn’t as impactful as The Mist, but I do like the concept of a toy monkey that causes anyone around Hal to die.

Just read Here There be Tygers, where Charles goes to the bathroom, but encounters a carnivorous obstacle.

I do enjoy a bit of magical realism, and while the story is very barebones, I still find it to be a tight less than ten pages read if you are in a hurry.

Finished The Mist, which follows the remaining survivors trying to get by in a mist infested world.

I do like this “Road to Nowhere” ending where the lives of everyone in the story (not counting the dead ones) are left up in the air, while giving us an open-ended “Alfred Hitchcock ending” that will leave you surprisingly satisfied. In any case, this is slow-burn horror at its most finest.

Finished Chapter 10 of The Mist, where preparations are made for Dave’s escape, along with a few allies, but they must contend with one crazy lady.

It’s confrontation time as Dave goes up against the doom-sayers of the market. I do feel this story is at its best when there is realistic tension in an otherwise otherworldly horror story.

Finished Chapter 9 of The Mist where Dave, Ollie and five of other people venture out to the Pharmacy.

Now this chapter in particular is full on survival horror, while the other chapters are more of a slow-burn, this chapter alone really nails the inescapable dread of a misty monster-infested nightmare world.

Finished Chapter 8 of The Mist, where Dave & Ollie uncovers a gruesome sight, Dave gets along well with Amanda, and Miller proposes a plan.

Looks like there is a wider mystery happening in the background thanks to mentions of the “Arrowhead Project”, but it’s very minor storyline, while the themes of staggering danger is pretty strong. I’m liking this story so far.

Finished Chapter 7 of The Mist, where the shopper spend their first night in the market, where dangers and reminiscences are aplenty.

Ok, so I think I get the whole backstory of Dave’s character, and also get a look at what the creatures in the mist look like. I do say that these creature designs do look stunning in written form, it can also inspire aspiring creature designers to take inspiration from them.

Finished Chapter 6, where plans are made to hole up in the store, and Brent Norton goes out with his gang.

Now this is really a slow-burn of a story, but the unsettling tone is palpable to a fault, I do enjoy the suspense that the story is suppling, even it it is mostly a bunch of people standing around the store. Will any make it out alive? I’m betting they won’t.

Started reading Chapter6 of The Mist, where division erupts and Mrs Carmody proposes a fateful solution that may or may not be true.

This book is pretty much accurate to how modern society deals with otherworldly horrors. Some deal with them, others think it’s not real, and one apocalyptic loony is having a blast telling every one of their doom. This has realism subtext written all over it.

Finished Chapter 5 of The Mist, where Dave Drayton, after seeing something horryfying, confronts the shoppers the best he could, only for discourse to rear its head, causing Dave, Ollie, Jim & Mercy convince the others about the discovery.

A lot of interesting characters here, including the sacrificial lambs in the first act, an apocalypse loony, a strict man and more. This short story is making a killing

Finished Chapter 4, where Dave and the other shopper tries to fix the generator, only to discover a horrific sight.

Alight, now I know that this book has hints of Lovecraftian horror when it comes to the creature designs, and I appreciate the terror the characters feel being impressively realistic in its atmospheric design. I highly recommend this story to fans of slow-burn horror
