Psycho4icecream thoughts so far:

between the poverty, the plagues, and wars you'd only ever find are being waged when soldiers show up in the next village over, i get why ppl felt like humanity was doomed, think doomerism is a response nearly every generation has had

--

yikes the Talmud rlly got scapegoated as the source of Jewish 'cunning', and i think on some level the burning spread was more about power, watching books burn at scale, with a fervent crowd who'd found a new target to rally against for their problems

--

Dembowski's visions are smth

--

Asher's father finds spiritual meaning in the light he works with but Asher j looks at it through science, like he almost views the idea of religion w more disdain or agnosticism. gitla and samuel do seem to soften him, he's grown attached enough atp to abandon his original plan of finding her a diff place to stay

--

Jacob's followers are stirring up a lot of fervor but the Besht is urging them to redirect it toward building smth instead of their current path which j seems to be rebellion, they dont hv a real sense of who they are at all

--

Jacob will flip to whichever religion offers a temporary advantage and he can easily justify it by claiming the 'true religion' is a synthesis of all three. but because of this contradiction, his followers can't ever be secure because the foundation itself keeps changing

--

Ivanie a shit place that's said to be liberal but isn't really, the 'sexual freedom' is j the leaders choosing who to sleep w and shunning women who refuse. and imo Moliwda's account has to be more accurate cuz Hana, as Jacob's wife, is still more shielded and revered in a way most women in Ivanie aren't

--

Hayah has been elevated into more of a holy symbol kinda like the Virgin Mary and she's closer to being one of the religion's founding figures than most other ppl
