The prose is powerful, almost hypnotic in its simplicity, like the hum of tyres on tarmac. It doesn’t diminish the impact of the violence and the blood but it prompts an unemotional evaluation of it which, it turns out, is much more chilling.

The word evil hasn’t been used yet the presence of unprecedented unhesitating transgression animates the story

Great prologue that got me straight into the sheriff’s head
Then a first chapter filled with vivid, bloody, context-free killing.
Then an immersion in the mind of a hunter in the desert faced with something bizarr.
All compelling stuff told with lean, efficient prose.
So why does McCarthy abandon quotation marks for direct speech? It adds nothing except unnecessary work for me.
