Romans chapter 8 is the richest, deepest, and most powerful sustained climax, anywhere in the literature of the early Christian movement, and perhaps anywhere else as well.

Romans is not written to explain how people may be saved. It describes that, to be sure, vividly, and compelling, but it does so, in order to highlight the faithfulness of God, and, with that, the challenges facing the covenant people. Those were the themes. The Roman Church urgently needed to understand.

To retrain the imagination and the natural impulses to resist the murky short-term delight of the pagan world is harder still. Jamaican sustained marriages of genuine mutual submission is perhaps hardest of all. Compromises and a second-best solutions are easy. To go for the full version of discipleship is to sign on for spiritual warfare.

all this will happen as they realize that it is Jesus himself who reveals that mystery. The Messiah himself is, the place, where they are to find, “ all the hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

“Wisdom” is, in fact, the subtext of much of cautions. As always, Paul wants people to learn to think – – not simply to imbibe rules, and principles to learned by heart, but to be able to grow up as genuine, humans, experiencing “ all the wealth of definite understanding” and coming to “ the knowledge of God’s mystery.”

The message of reconciliation is this, reembodying God’s actions.

The roots slowly found a moisture. From the death of the dark soil, way below, previous consciousness, he drew Hope and new possibilities. The fruit of that labor remains to this day, near the heart of Christian belief.
