After heavy losses, King Agamemnon calls an assembly and admits the war may be a failure. Nestor advises Agamemnon to make amends with the alienated warrior Achilles. Agamemnon sends an embassy consisting of Odysseus, Phoenix, and Great Ajax, offering massive treasures, the return of Briseis, and one of his daughters in marriage. Achilles refuses to rejoin the war, stating he will fight when Trojans reach his ships.

The trench dug in front of the Achaean wall stops the Trojans, so Hector orders his men to attack . Polydamas tells Hector to retreat, but he refuses. Sarpedon leads the Lycians in a charge and tears away the wall with his hands. Hector picks up a boulder, smashes it against the gate of the Greeks and shatters the bolts. The Trojans pour through the breach toward the Achaean ships while the Greeks panic.

Zeus sends Strife down to the Achaeans to scream a war cry that makes them fight. Agamemnon arms himself in armor and leads the Greeks. Zeus instructs Hector to wait until Agamemnon takes an injury and leaves. Coon, a Trojan warrior, wounds Agamemnon in the arm with a spear. Agamemnon kills Coon, but the mounting pain forces him to retreat to his chariot and leave. Hector charges in and pushes the Achaeans back.

Agamemnon and Menelaus cannot sleep because the Trojan camp is very close. They wake Nestor and call a council of Greek leaders to plan a scouting mission. Diomedes volunteers for the dangerous task and chooses Odysseus to go with him. Odysseus and Diomedes get useful information about the Trojan camp and Thracian allies from Dolon. Diomedes kills the Thracian king and twelve of his men, and Odysseus steals horses.

Zeus weighs the fates of the Achaeans and the Trojans on a giant golden scale, and the Achaean side sinks heavy with doom. Zeus hurls lightning bolts at the Greek army. Hector and the Trojans surge forward, driving the terrified Achaeans back toward their defensive walls and ships. Night falls to end the day of slaughter, and Hector orders his troops to camp on the plain rather than retreat inside Troy.

Prompted by Apollo and Athena, Hector challenges the strongest Greek warrior to single combat. A lottery chooses Great Ajax (Ajax the Greater). The battle ends in a draw when night falls, and the two warriors exchange gifts of goodwill (Hector gives Ajax a sword, and Ajax gives Hector a belt). Both sides agree to a temporary truce to burn and bury their dead.

Agamemnon persuades Menelaus to refuse a ransom, ruthlessly declaring that no Trojan should be spared, not even an unborn child. Glaucus gives gold armor in exchange for Diomedes' bronze. Hector returns to the city to urge the queen and matrons to sacrifice twelve heifers to the goddess Athena to stop Diomedes. Hector admits he shares Andromache’s love for Troy's future, but his honor compels him to fight.

As heavy fighting resumes, the goddess Athena fills Diomedes with raging courage and power. She forbids him from fighting any god except for Aphrodite if he encounters her. Pandarus shoots Diomedes in the shoulder. He kills Pandarus with a spear and shatters Aeneas’ hip with a boulder. When Aphrodite rescues her son Aeneas, Diomedes slashes her wrist. She drops Aeneas and flees back to Mount Olympus.

Zeus teases Hera and Athena, noting that Menelaus won the duel, but Aphrodite saved Paris. Athena takes the form of a Trojan soldier and finds the archer Pandarus. Pandarus shoots an arrow at Menelaus for fame and glory. Agamemnon walks through the Greek camp to rally his commanders. He scolds or tests others like Odysseus and Diomedes, reminding them of the brave deeds of their fathers to spur them into action.

Zeus sending a deceptive dream to Agamemnon promising victory. Agamemnon tests his army's morale by telling them to go home, but panics when they actually rush to the ships. Odysseus and Nestor rally the men, Thersites is beaten for insubordination, and the massive "Catalog of Ships" details the Greek and Trojan forces.
