OSS born when US sends a handful of "vice-consuls" to Northern Africa to keep their eyes and ears open and pass along what they learn. Donovan is asked for a ton of stuff he doesn't have, and so radio outposts are set up for guerrilla use.

There are some compelling anecdotes well told, but there is no excuse for the language here. Open Road, kindly edit, or do whatever you would do if the N word were freely used in an otherwise salesworthy book. I counted the J word 5 times on one page, and that's inexcusable. Also, the word is Asian when referring to people, not Oriental. Give me a fucking break.

Fascinating material, but what's with the J word? You wouldn't publish a book that casually tossed the N word in without clear central purpose, and so why are writers so confident that this will be overlooked? Data has no citations, but it appears to me that Alsop is one of those guys that can write on his own merit in this area. Love the blow by blow steps of the resistance; wanted to read about it for a long time.

"Those whose duty it was to dispatch them into occupied territory never lost a deep sense of admiration for these men and women, in their nondescript clothes and paper-soled shoes, lying huddled in blankets in the belly of a giant aircraft, a sympathetic contrast to the fur-jacketed, heavy booted soldiers whose duty it was to open the door of the bomb bay..."
