Miss Gibson is with me at The Fern, on a folding stand across the room by the bookshelf. Moonlight eddies off her - scratches, gouges, furrows filled with grime and best not to know, patches of finish all but worn away — as I write this. She’s not been played in a year or more, hands that once helped give her voice subdued by pain and arthritis.
She too, I suppose, has had her say.

Each night it becomes more and more difficult to remember the name of my hometown, my number, my reason for being where I am. The people on the street are few, and when I ask them where the bus station is they snicker and give me bad directions. When awake, I’m keenly attuned to coincidence, searching wood grain and clouds for faces, trying with all my heart to rediscover my place in the story.
