kind of wild to read this as someone from upper appalachia (where coal mining died in the 1960s, if we're being generous, rather than where it is still ongoing) because emilee's (not religious, thankfully) experience is reminiscent of my mother's generation's, their parents avoiding coal mining but often being overworked and underpaid in an economy that is quickly de-industrializing without new prospects emerging
