There have been riots in Shelburne and Birchtown because of the lack of work and Negroes getting work based on cheap labor. Aminata has lost her daughter, May. The Witherspoons took Aminata's daughter, May, to unknown points. Years have passed. John Clarson is in Birchtown offering free Negroes passage to Sierra Leone in Africa.

Aminata was on the ship to Nova Scotia with her husband, Chekura. At the last minute she was taken off the ship because a claim had been made against her. Robinson Appleby, her former master, claims he still owes her.
Aminata has told Chekura to continue to Nova Scotia. She will find him in time.

The British have lost the Revolutionary war and have eight months to leave the colonies. Any Negro who helped the British for a year behind enemy lines can relocate to Nova Scotia. He will be hard work. Aminata is going. Her husband is back and is going with her. Aminata is recording in "The Book of Negroes" all the Negroes and what they did to add the British. Aminata is getting paid.

Aminata is in New York. She has ran away from Solomon Lindo. She is teaching Negroes to read and working at Fraunces Tavern. Georgia is deceased, Fomba is dead, and her baby is no longer living. She left her husband in South Carolina. He is owed by a man that wants to go further into the low country and did not know when the next time he would see her. She has now spent twenty years in the colonies.

Aminata is on a plantation on an island in Carolina low-country. She stays with a slave name Georgia. Georgia has taught her to speak Gullah (the Negro language) and English( white man's language). The white man is referred to as a buckra. Georgia is teaching her the do's and don'ts of slave. Fomba is on the same plantation. All the other captives on the slave ship were sold to other buckra.

There is a Chief Biton who is planning a revolt. Chekura, a young boy captive, thinks everyone is going to be killed. Fomba can take a nail and snap off his shackle.

Aminata has made the long walk to the slave ships. It has taken them three months. They were treated harshly. Sanu had a baby girl. Fanta is about to deliver. Now, on the slave ship the toubab are raping the women. The medicine man toubab has Aminata caring for his parrot. Also, he bring slave women into his cabin to have sex and forces Aminata to listen as she is pressed against the wall of the bed.

So far.... A very good read. Aminata is from the village Bayo. She is a free Muslim. She is close to her mother and father. Her mother delivers babies in her village and the surrounding communities. Her father is a jeweler. Her father is teaching her to read and write. Her life is good until the strange men from another village attacked her village killed her parents and took her to be sold. She is eleven.
