Aminata is on a plantation on an island in Carolina low-country. She stays with a slave name Georgia. Georgia has taught her to speak Gullah (the Negro language) and English( white man's language). The white man is referred to as a buckra. Georgia is teaching her the do's and don'ts of slave. Fomba is on the same plantation. All the other captives on the slave ship were sold to other buckra.

Now, on the slave ship the toubab are raping the women. The medicine man toubab has Aminata caring for his parrot. Also, he bring slave women into his cabin to have sex and forces Aminata to listen as she is pressed against the wall of the bed.

So far.... A very good read. Aminata is from the village Bayo. She is a free Muslim. She is close to her mother and father. Her mother delivers babies in her village and the surrounding communities. Her father is a jeweler. Her father is teaching her to read and write. Her life is good until the strange men from another village attacked her village killed her parents and took her to be sold. She is eleven.
