The plot is often bugged down by descriptions of clothing and witty, but meaningless dialog; it's all very edgy, because everyone is always ready to rip a head off, but we don't know why, except for some vagueness like: "there's be hard feelings between them for a really long time".

Most to the plot could've been told in much less time, because it's really big-picture stuff like you find in a historical text.
