I got this by chance from the library, expecting it to be depressing and boring like Hobsbawm (don't @ me) but it's actually a great read and the Provincial Government of France is a truly wacky group of characters who all not only hate each other but all of them have their own specific military to defend against the others -- wild and entertaining stuff.

Germany somewhat less fun than France although honestly I think because it's Germany; the brief pages on Bavaria and Saxony are very entertaining. Of course the refusal of the "crown from the gutter" is one of the great moments in history for proving that the past is a different country and your common sense is useless for understanding it. Now on to Austria, another example (nation-state? no thanks - M)
