Parts of this feel a bit forced, or rather preachy, imho. As if we don't know how humans have made a heavy impact on the earth and it's creatures. And it's very predictable, being a 'good feeling' book.

Hi Jonathan. It's a sweet story, really for younger people as its focus is on the two emerging adolescents - Marten and Dave. I get a bit bogged down at times w/ it as it seems to repeat the main philosophy about every creature deserves to live as we humans mess up the planet. He's a lyrical writer, tho and I'll read more of his work.
Having read nearly every book he's written along with his essays, Brian pays homage to humanity, nature and spirit with a bit of humor at times, Louis the elk as one of many examples. I found the romance of Dave the trapper and Miss Moss delightful and the ingenuity of Dave as well. Make sure to read Mink River and the Plover when time allows since they're far and away different from this story
