I think we’ve all become a little too comfortable with being open and honest. You can be raw and relatable without being unattractive. Where is the mystery? The romance? The whimsy?

I want to be able to loose myself in a book. To be drawn into a fantasy; a romanticised version of life where experiences are thrilling and unrealistic. This book is not doing that. It’s dragging me kicking and screaming back into the banal. I feel like a balloon that’s being slowly deflated.

Everyone in this is meant to be sexy but they just end up reading painfully millennial

The emphasis on the mundanity of life directly after describing the least sensual and most performative, try-hard sex acts is so horribly jarring. I can’t tell whether it’s on purpose or not 🤔 Either way, there’s something very “My Dad Wrote a Porno” about this book.

Whatever the opposite of glamorous is, Violet is it. She embodies all of the aspects of womanhood that everyone knows but no one admits to, which strangely, does not present as relatable but has the adverse affect; it cultivates a cocktail of second hand embarrassment, disgust and shame. Excellent writing.
