What do you want? Belbalm had asked her. Safety, comfort, to feel unafraid. I want to live to grow old, Alex thought as she pulled the curtains closed. I want to sit on my porch and drink foul-smelling tea and yell at passersby. I want to survive this world that keeps trying to destroy me.

Still if she’d had a choice, she thought she might take another brawl, even with a bruiser like Lance, rather than face the salon tonight, classes tomorrow, and the day after—and the day after that.
When she was fighting for her life, it was strictly pass/fail. All she had to do was survive and she could call it a win.

He pulled her close, his fingers digging into her abdomen, and she could feel claws at their tips. He whispered in her ear, “I will serve you ’til the end of days.”
“And love me,” she said with a laugh, bold in the dream, unafraid.
But all he said was, “It is not the same.”

“They tried to kill me, Hellie,” she rasped as she slid into the dark. That means I get to try to kill them.

Whenever I start this book, the very second I do, especially on audio, something clicks in my soul like no other book does, no matter how much I love the other books; this is not a matter of liking at all. This is my soul book. Something happens to my brain any time I read it, and I've been chasing this high ever since.

I wanted to keep this reread for October, but I can't stop thinking about the third book coming out in 4 days! So I'm listenin to this, AGAIN 🫠

Weirdly enough, this dark book is becoming my comfort book.
