God, the awkwardness! Boys! Friends! Rules! Parents! Everything is so fraught. Our MC is even more anxious than I was, and with a wider variety of triggers. I don't know if I wanted to remember what that felt like, but also I think I did.
The analysis of language -- how it defines culture, how we learn it, and how that process impacts our understanding of culture -- is exciting and great.

Taiwan is a very different place than it was when I moved there when I was 21, and I am not ABC, but there is still a lot that feels like my experience, and this wonderful book is making me feel hella nostalgic.

l thought I had given up on Kuang after Babel and Katabasis (which grows more awful the farther I get from it). Maybe the wrong decision? Or is it just b/c you relate to the whole Taipei thing?

The Taipei connection is certainly a hook for me, but I also just think the book is great, and smart, and real. A very particular coming of age, but also a fascinating deep dive into language and culture. I am afraid I don't generally read fantasy. I just don't enjoy that genre. As a result, I have not read Katabasis or Babel. I have no basis for comparison with those books.
She (Kuang) is going to be speaking at LitQuake in SF in a couple of weeks. Although I had written her off as lightweight after 'Yellowface,' she has certainly continued growing since then, and I'm enjoying your enjoyment of this one.

Don't want to steer you wrong.
