“See, I remember now, Tobias and you need to remember, too. I can see much better from where I’m at now and if you don’t remember, bad, bad things are going to happen.”

“What do people do?” he asked the heavy summer air. “They drink. A lot,” Tobias answered himself. “That’s what they do. Or they go to therapy, but I don’t think that would work out too well for me. I’d scare my therapist.”

The silence of the crows was eerie; they were noisy, raucous animals, rarely quiet especially when gathered together as they were. Crows talked back and forth with one another, speaking their black crow tongue and scolding anyone or anything that got too near their territory. The crows gathered in the trees were silent, the gleam of their eyes glittering like jewels from the shadows of the tree limbs they rested on.

Jeremy sat at a stop sign watching a fat woman and what he felt qualified as a herd of small children cross the road. He was transfixed by the jiggle of her flabby ass cheeks which were barely concealed by the cut off legs of her short-shorts. Fat hung in rolls from the sides of her bandanna top. Her hair was greasy bleach-blond. There was only one word for what he was looking at and that word was Classy.

He was dimly aware that he should never have been able to open the door so easily, but people did impossible things all the time.

That was what really filled the spaces when the art drained out of him and he had spent his life trying to find ways to breech the flood of memories, names, birthdays. One of those ways, it seemed, was hitting Mooncricket who was sweet and still innocent in a strange way for a boy who had spent so much time with a needle in his arm and homelessness one lost friend away.
