u know what i finally understand what makes me so agitated when reading this (and some of austen’s books): FREE INDIRECT DISCOURSE. this narrator in particular….one moment he’s so sarcastic the next dead serious and im so confounded by margaret’s blind self assurance because there are brilliant moments of clarity in the narration….ugh

margaret girl don’t piss me off….for someone who prizes open mindedness and nuance u sure think in binary sometimes…and no u can’t fix him so stop with ur savior complex….men aren’t projects….especially men like henry….im rage reading this book now ngl….like im sure the schlegels gonna face their consequences but im still ANNOYED

but then again i love mrs dalloway…something about forster’s FID in this just makes the reading process very torturous…it’s like self justification followed by sharp insight then a big blunder then self justification IT’S ALL VERY JARRING…perhaps forster is 100% intentional and is good at his craft but IM STILL SO 🤨🤨🤨🤨 the whole time…perhaps i enjoy irony/pain/clarity from a stable foothold
