There's something interesting about the main character not only spending time with the person the audience knows to be the villain, but outright worshipping her for a while. Deep dissonance between in-universe and out-of-universe knowledge.
I'm glad she caught on before it'd start to get old.

Here's another plot thread. Something about dust, and something about kidnapping children. Obviously these are connected - every narrative law demands it - but the main character shouldn't figure it out quite this easily. To her it'd all feel like too much of a coincidence. But so it goes.
At any rate, things are picking up.

It's been quarter-century since I last read this book, and even then it was just the one time and never picked up the sequels anyway. I remember almost nothing - bears, daemons, high concepts, no details. And I rather feel like the first chapter was a bit of a wasted space that could largely have been skipped, but after that it's been picking up.
