The reader has to piece together the progression of the story through the inner dialogue of the people living in it. A lot of the pivotal plot points (e.g marriage) don't even get covered, the reader learns about their happening through the memories and thoughts of characters. Lispector's book revolves around the invisible, the inner worlds of characters that never bubble up to the surface of the material world.

Nothing could have really prepared me for Clarice Lispector. This is my first time reading a stream-of-consciousness book. I like its free approach to language and structure. Instead of experiencing the main character in a narrative story constructed in hindsight, Lispector takes you straight into her real-time thoughts and experiences. This does however make the text hard and at times almost jarring to read.
