I can tell the author really wants me to find this conversation tense and suspenseful. unfortunately she’s left everything so mysterious and vague that I have no idea what the stakes are so it’s just mildly confusing instead

this writing is EMBARRASSINGLY clunky. it's like aveyard was aiming for a flowery 18th century style without knowing how to do that and instead landed on "choose the most awkward ungrammatical possible phrasing at every turn." her editors are notttt doing their job yikes
