A smoulder rather than a slow burn.

I’m 60% through and I’m still not sure whether there’s something supernatural going on or if I’m witnessing the effects of trauma from guilt or grief or both.

It’s the prose and the evocation of people and place that’s carrying me along at the moment.

I thought having the story told from a young girl’s point of view might shift this towards being a YA story. Instead, concern for the bright, curious, making the best of it and maybe not knowing what she’s missing girl raises my engagement and feeds a nebulous sense of threat.
