Because I do have the courage. I want to make paintings that express how I see people, and sometimes I may even be successful. But that, too, is meaningless…

Love is nothing like the simple compassion you describe, and neither is it a passion that comes and goes. It is something altogether different, something that defies analysis. And we are never to know where it comes from, or where it goes on the day it disappears. Whereas friendship is constant and built on understanding. We can see where it started and know why it falls apart. But love gives no reasons.

This entire monologue of hers is so tea I wish I could just insert the whole thing.

“Why is it that even in the way you beg, there is dominance, and pity in the way we refuse?”

As different as you are, you're still a man... and all the men that I have ever known have ended up leaving in sorrow or anger once they realize I don't love them, and can never love them... But why, when they say goodbye, do they assume I am the one to blame?

This was how life should be lived: attuned to nature, its every flutter and sway, while time moves inexorably forward. I saw then that over the past fortnight, my life had begun to take on meaning. I saw, too, what it would mean to lose it. A shaft of light had passed over me, illuminating my empty life with possibilities I dared not question. But now, just as mysteriously, it had vanished. Only now did I understand what this meant.

In the end, this was just another city. The streets were a bit wider, and much cleaner, and the inhabitants were blonder. However, there was nothing here to sweep me off my feet. Knowing so little about the Europe of my imagination, I had no way to measure it against the city in which I now lived... I had yet to learn that nothing in this world can ever match the marvels that we conjure up in our own minds.

Kiara There is no way for those I scorn to understand what I've done, while those who do understand are in any event above scorn. By this I mean to say that painting, like all arts, answers to no one - it falls short of its aspirations. In spite of which it is the most important thing I do.
