This book covers a story of married couple David and Adele, David a psychiatrist and Adele his beautiful stay at home wife. From the outside everything seems perfect, but their marriage is extremely troubled. They moved to London and David gets a new job in a clinical practice and it turns out that he had a bar he had made out with his assistant Louise. This is where the drama of the story begins.

There are two parallel storylines going on in this book. The first is the past. Adele has a history of mental health issues and she lost both of her parents in a house fire. She went to this facility to work on her mental health where she found her best friend Rob. He was a heroin and drug addict. They ended up forming a beautiful friendship. She ended up sharing with Rob her deep dark secret, which is that she is basically able to channel a adore in her subconscious, which allows her to basically teleport to different places that she knows and basically oversee life as it’s happening when she goes through that door. This allows her to know everything that’s going on all around her. The only thing is, you can only teleport mentally to places that you’ve been and know.

The present time, David and Adele‘s relationship is toxic and broken. David is super unhappy, which is why he basically starts an affair with his assistant Louisa. Louise happens to run into Adele somewhere on the street, they crashed into one another, and they go to coffee and basically start a friendship. Adele solely starts manipulating Louise and basically teaches her about this situation with the door. She also manipulates Louise and into eating better giving up smoking and going to the gym more.

Basically, a series of very confusing events happens. And what’s revealed is that Rob, Adele‘s best friend, died on the weekend that he was visiting her, and she pushed his dead body into the well. She was wearing David’s watch at the time which he gifted her, and it was always really big on her so when she pushed him into the well, the watch fell in. She had basically been using this to blackmail David and keep him with her. She said that if you were to leave and divorce her that she would go to the police and let them know where the body is and that the watch is down there.

Basically things come to head at the end of the book. Initially, Louise believed Adele and took her side, thinking that David was this angry person and always kept Adele drugged. She then comes to find out that Adele is in fact the crazy one and David was telling the truth about everything. David was in love with Louise at this point after their affair. So basically David comes clean about everything including Rob passing away. So he basically decides that night that he’s gonna go to Scotland and confess everything to the detective that had investigated the death, which would basically allow him to leave Adele at that point. So David goes to confess this situation to the police officer, because he had basically been complicit and helping to hide the death.

Well, this is happening, Adele basically stages her final hurrah. She text Louisa that she’s basically gonna kill herself. Louisa runs over to Adele’s house and basically what happens is Louisa goes through the second door and sees that Adele was passed out in the bed so she tries to enter Adele‘s body so that she could have her escape because Adele had set the house on fire. At that point, the story immediately cuts to a few months later. We find out that Adele had passed away, but it was actually Louise in the body of Adele that had passed away. When Louisa spirit enter Adele‘s body, Adele‘s spirit had entered Louisa‘s body. At that point, Adele in Louisa‘s body had overdosed Louise in Adèle‘s body with heroin so that she would die.

So basically, it was Louise’s spirit that had passed away, and now Adele spirit lives inside the body of Louise. In the pen ultimate chapter, David and Adele in Louisa‘s body are speaking to the police officer who was responsible for investigating Rob‘s death. He basically says that David is not gonna go to jail. At that point, David and the fake Louise get married. But in the car ride coming home from the wedding, Adam, who is Louisa‘s son, basically says that he’s suspicious of his mom and her answers to a bunch of questions.

In the final chapter, the plot twist is revealed.

It basically turns out that when Rob was visiting Adele‘s home, and David came to visit from medical school, Rob fell absolutely absolutely in love with him. What actually ended up happening is that Rob and the real Adele switched bodies using the second door method. At that point, Rob in the body of Adele poisoned Adele in the body of Rob with heroin and push the dead body into the well. This allowed Rob in Adele‘s body to continue living life as Adele with David as her husband. But unfortunately, the marriage became toxic, and David began to hate Rob in the body of Adele. Because of that Rob in the body of Adele had to figure out a way to start over fresh. In order to do this basically fake Adele had to find somebody whose body she was able to take over. This is why Louisa was perfect. David ended up falling in love with Louise, which was always fake Adele’s plan. That way Louisa was killed off in the body of Adele, and Rob could continue being with his obsession David.
