After this, I'm going to read the most cheerful, hopeful, optimistic book known to man. I know I'm learning a lot and I'm grateful for the process. But one can only stand so much of this. I'm constantly thinking about death, as I'm reading this, how I'm going to die, how my loved ones are going to die; how death itself is a part of life. It sounds obvious, but this book makes it evident to an extreme.

The engineer asks to be invited over to check his painting of Chauchat, who's Hans sole motivator in this whole book. Doesn't this man have any other motivation?
Settembrini is part of the Order for Good of the World. It has an Ubermensch vibe; I don't know what to think of it yet. It's been fun to read this, ngl.

Ohwow, I think I'm enjoying this? It's still much too morbid and sad. It puts everything into perspective: your time on this Earth, the certainty of death, diseases, the body which carries us through this life and its frailness. All of that. I'm warming up to Berghof, to the Sanatorium; I'm understanding more of what the book is telling me, what I should be taking from it, and I'm even noticing the 7s all throughout

Yeah this isn't great. It's like a very bland full course meal. Or a German stand-up comedy set. You can appreciate the effort, but ultimately it's just not fun for you.
Joking aside, I should've been hooked by now, I'd assume. But nothing really is making me cling to this book. Hans isn't interesting. The whole Frau Chauchat development is very lukewarm. I don't know, man, I'm not feeling this book at allllllllll

Never has a book made it so hard for me to acclimatize myself with its mechanisms. I'm trusting Thomas Mann is going somewhere with this pace, or lack thereof, but my hope is slowly dissipating. Nothing yet had grabbed me, nor anything is urging me to stay. I'm living on a prayer that these bland characters will pick up some flavor in a few chapters, like when you learn to season your meals from watching your mom.

Adapting to this book's dry humor and morbid tone has been quite a challenge for me. I'm still not over my last book, Notre-Dame, and the initial phase with The Magic Mountain is uncomfortable. I'm not really invested yet, I didn't understand the rhythm of this book, nor what to do with the information I'm being given. I don't yet care about Hans, I even sort of think he's a douche. I like Joachim, though.

I'm reading this one with my mom! And besides the occasional spoiler she inadvertently lets out and the extremely tiny font on this edition (seriously, I kid you not, I had to buy a magnifying glass) this is proving to be a very interesting read.

The chapter on Anatomy was outstanding. It was grim, awful, gut-wrenching. It was the best of chapters, it was the worst of chapters. But seriously, looking at the body as life itself is something I can get behind. I remember long nights at uni where the class discussed the dichotomy between mind and body; I'd always think about how our brain determines how we experience the world. So, to me, it's always been body before mind, or even body is the very mind
