The small rodent—initially called "Steamboat Willy” wanders into E Block as if it belongs there. Dean tries to sweep the mouse away, but Paul stops him. Brutal feeds it a piece of his corned-beef sandwich, and the mouse eats it deliberately like a human. The mouse vanishes under the door of the restraint/storage room, leaving the guards baffled as to how it squeezed through. They realize the mouse is different.

Paul meets with Warden Hal Moores to discuss how to handle the sadistic and protected guard, Percy Wetmore.

Paul lies to his wife Janice about his distress over Percy. He suffers severe pain from his urinary infection and has a disturbing dream about blonde girls with bloody hair.

The Detterick twins were happy to sleep in the porch. Marjorie, the mother, wakes up to the girls gone. Klaus, the dad, and Howard, the son, grab guns and start searching. The search party along with cops find Cora’s nightgown. They find John holding the dead girls in his arms. Officer McGee tells Coffey he is under arrest and spits on him.

Paul and Harry return to Paul's office, where guard Dean Stanton is sorting through files. Harry tells Paul he may get in trouble because of Percy’s actions. The guards other than Percy talk about how they will show the prisoners respect no matter what.

The narrator works at the cold mountain penitentiary in e block. Inmates call the area the “green mile” because the floor is a lime green color. A turn to the left leads to life and a turn to the right leads to the electric chair called “old sparky.” The narrator is reading these as he reflects on John Coffey.
