The proselytizing and rigid dogmatism is getting really clunky and boring. Page after page - how man craves unification, and how life is so beautiful in God, and how miserable and corrupt and sinful are those who cannot recognize the miracle of God, and etc.

I fucking get it, gott damn.

I may not finish this; the ridiculous Orthodox bullshit is utterly relentless.

Slooooooowly working through this dusty boi...

This is just dripping with schemes and drama and ungodly thirsty young people.

Ah. Erm. Also lots of casual misogyny and antisemitism. Been a minute since I've read ye olde Russians - I'd somehow spaced on that time honored tradition of marginalizing everyone who isn't white and doesn't have a wiener.

Good times.

It's quite funny... boy does it feel padded though.

Berengaria Do you have other books that would count for the LBC? There's no sense torturing yourself. DNF are allowed for just this reason! And you'll get the page count credit so all your pain and suffering isn't lost if you do DNF. (Just saying)

Chris Oh, loads of other books waiting. But I need closure on this! And... I haven't even arrived at the murder yet, which has been foreshadowed and referenced for the last 370 pages! 😂

hawk hope you make the right decision for you, whether it's to continue or abandon!

Valerie Book Valkyrie Chris, would it help if you replaced the word "god" with what you may lean toward: The Universe, Thor, Inner Spirit, whatever?

Chris 🤔 there's an idea. I'm going to finish this beast, regardless. Thank you for the ideas and the motivation, friends!

Jodi (on semi-hiatus) I hope you're able to finish, Chris, but DNF is always a handy option. I liked this book a lot, but it was MANY years ago (in my 20s), and if I read it again today I doubt I'd be so enthralled. It think it's a love it or hate it kind of book. You can only do what feels right for you.👍🏼

Chris Thanks Jodi! I'm past a lot of the stuff that occurs in the monastery now - I'm hopeful that I'll continue enjoy it from here! The story and the characters are fantastic once the religious overload finally ceases.

Pia G. Chris, I had almost the exact opposite experience with this one. Compared with the other Dostoevsky novels I’ve read, I actually found The Brothers Karamazov surprisingly fluid and much easier to get through. The religious debates can definitely start piling up, though, so I completely understand why they’re testing your patience. But then again.. classic Dostoevsky! 😀
