France gave up on the project. And as the US was thinking to go through Nicaragua, Mt Pele in Martinique, 1902, had the greatest volanic eruption in the 20th century. 30k+ people died. Could this happen in Nicaragua? If the US abandons the early work by the French in Panama, might another country take up their partial work and gain a trade-advantage?
