Paul is at his nursing home and reflects on things. He watches movies and the whole time thinks about Billy Wharton. Paul then reflects back on when Wharton came to the penitentiary in 1932 and how Percy pretty much froze while chaos was happening. Brutal has to knock Wharton out. Wharton wakes up and threatens Paul.

Paul goes into John’s cell alone to talk about his upcoming execution. Bill notes that Delacroix cannot seem to register that his execution is the next day, while Billy makes jokes. Paul reveals that things take a terrible turn later that night when Percy Mr. Jingles. To comfort Delacroix, Brutal "Mouseville" where the mouse can live safely. Percy stomps on the mouse with his boot while Delacroix screams in grief.

Paul and his wife Janice visit Warden Hal’s terminally ill wife, Melinda, after doctors send her home from the hospital with terminal brain cancer. He thinks about John Coffey again with his healing powers. Brutal takes Delacroix and his performing mouse, Mr. Jingles, out of the cell under the pretense that prison staff want to watch a special show.

William Wharton acts out by urinating on guard Harry's leg. The guards use a water hose to blast Wharton and force him into a restraint jacket for the first time. Despite the punishment, Wharton remains unrepentant and plots his next disruptive act.

Paul arranges for Brutal to cover his shift and travels to find Burt Hammersmith, the journalist who covered Coffey's trial. Coffey had no prior criminal record, background, or evidence of past crimes. There were scars on Coffey’s back, which his defense attorney tried to use as proof of a bad childhood. Paul struggles to let go of the idea that Coffey might be innocent. Hammersmith shares his own trauma with Paul.

Paul is dealing with his urinary infection bad. John calls him to his cell and transmits an electric like current to Paul’s body. John absorbs the disease and is fully healed. Delacroix sees this and calls him a magic man.
