“I should have listened.”
(We should have learned to speak)
“I should have known.”
(We should have been a better teacher)
“I should have understood.”
(We should have allowed confusion)
“I wish we could start over.”
(We wish it too)
“I’m going home now, right?”
(Yes you are going home)

“Don’t yell at me! What is your problem that you can’t see me? Maybe you saw your reflection in the ocean so long, it’s the only far you recognize. No wonder you killed yourself. You got sick and finally had a reason to need me, but when you looked around, oops. Not there. Of course you’d want to fall off the boat. Join yourself at the bottom of the sea. It was weak. You were weak.”

I don’t understand this argument. Yes Jay ran away at 15, but that doesn’t mean he should have been as mature as his 50+ year old father, nor does he share blame in his father’s selfish actions. Mitt Gardiner was a bad father, full stop. His abuse of Jay was enabled not only by jay’s mom and sisters, but by the whole town. Just because this abuse was hidden under the guise of teaching doesn’t make it okay.
