“But in that case is it not true that those elements—all the residuum of reality which we are obliged to keep to ourselves, which cannot be transmitted in talk, even from friend to friend, from master to disciple, from lover to mistress, that ineffable something which differentiates qualitatively what each of us has felt and what he is obliged to leave behind at the threshold of the phrases…”

To write a passage so beautiful and then return to the same mind-numbing topics…
“At last he came to the Vermeer which he remembered as more striking, more different from anything else he knew, but in which, thanks to the critic’s article, he noticed for the first time some small figures in blue, that the sand was pink, and, finally, the precious substance of the tiny patch of yellow wall.”

Oh, can’t you see
You belong to me?
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take?
Every move you make
And every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I’ll be watching you
Every move you make
Every step you take
I’ll be watching you

Immediately on reading it I remembered exactly what made me stop reading (I’m much farther than this point now; I just don’t have the book on me). I find all the Albertine stuff torturous to read about. I know she’s going to die soon, though. (I feel bad saying that because she’s based on someone Proust cared a lot for, but I’m talking about the fictional character, and only so that this part will end.)
