I really like that he gave up his name

The house didn’t work. The blood didn’t work. And here, at the end of everything—house refused, flesh refused, vow refused, no orders left to follow and nothing he wants from me—I only have one thing left to offer.

I don't see why the letter would matter. Who cares if Caligula's father didn't kill Damiano's, they've come to terms with their relationship.
