How could he ever say no?
“Okay,” Travis says quietly.
“Just one last time,” Carter whispers.
Travis nods, pressing a kiss to Carter’s messy hair. “One last time.”
They both know it’s a lie.

Carter has to tilt his head to see what Nathan drew. When he realizes what it is, his breath catches in his throat.
He drew Carter. He drew him sleeping in the bed, face pressed against the pillow, lips slightly parted, a lock of hair falling onto his forehead. The blankets are pushed down and tangled in his legs. One hand is curled on the mattress, like he’s reaching for something. Or someone.

Carter takes a drink. It’s strong, but good. Really fucking good. He offers the bottle to Nathan. He takes it with a warm smile, bringing it to his lips. Carter has never been so jealous of a bottle.
Nathan hands the bottle back and Carter immediately takes another drink. It has absolutely nothing to do with the way he wishes he could feel Nathan’s lips against his own.

“This is your guilt talking. You want to punish yourself for what’s happened to Carter. But they’ll fucking wreck you, man.
You have no idea what these guys will do. I won’t-”
“You will. You will let them rape me and beat me and do whatever the fuck they want with me, Nathan. That’s an order.”

Travis freaking out cuz now he has to live a life in which this case is over :(

“Maybe when this is all over…” he takes a breath. The firework explodes. It’s huge and bright and beautiful. Maybe they could be huge and bright and beautiful. “Who knows… maybe I’ll fall in love with Travis.”
“Yeah.” Nathan tightens his hold on Carter. “Maybe you will.”

“I know. I just don’t know if after everything we’ve been through together… I don’t know if it’s enough, Nate.”
Nathan releases a slow breath. “I worried that was the case.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t. You don’t have to be sorry for a goddamn thing, Carter.” Nathan presses a kiss to the crown of his head. “Whatever happens with us, I just want you to be happy, okay? That’s all I want for you.”

And suddenly - fucking magically - there are a hundred tiny bursts across the sky.
Fireworks.
“You-” Carter has to stop and swallow hard to keep from crying. “You remembered.”

It’s safer with his back to Nathan. Much safer. Especially when he feels Nathan’s hand gently rest on his shoulder, and he realizes that this awful thing he’s feeling isn’t just jealousy of the past, but a heartbreaking realization that this could be his future. Nathan, sleeping with other men.

“Enrique,” the man corrects softly, a glint in his eye. "If we're going to destroy a man's empire together, we should probably be on a first name basis."

But it's different when it's personal. Vasco sees his slaves as products. Objects. Not human. But his son is as human as it gets.

Nathan has to swallow a laugh at the irony of this conversation. Age and consent were never factors Vasco cared about before. He knows for a fact Vasco likes them young - through puberty, but not quite adults yet. It's not a secret that Miller is the same.

“Is it consensual?” he asks, his eyes narrowed when he sets them on Nathan.
“I have no idea. There was no evidence of force – but you and I both know that means nothing.”
“He’s a fucking child,” Vasco argues. “Even if he’s agreeing to – he can’t possibly – he’s a fucking child.”

~ This is a really good show of hypocrisy, while none of them deal in the child market they ignore consent unless its those they care about

“Ignore them,” sir growls in his ear, the words a clear order. “You belong to me. Only me. They don’t fucking matter, understood?”
“Y-yes, sir,” Carter gasps.
But… it’ s so much easier said than done.
Especially when they all start to agree on one thing – “Make the bitch come!”
“Show us how much you like to be raped, slut!”

I really like the detail of Carter calling him "sir" in his head. I noticed it in book 1 and it honestly worked so well.

I guess we just hate joy now

“Did you know that flowers have to be strong to grow in the mountains? Incredibly strong. Resilient. The conditions are harsh."
“Okay…”
“These are daffodils.”
"Oh. I - I didn't know."
“They’re survivors." Carter laughs. The sound is watery. Beautiful. "I had no idea daffodils were strong flowers, but if they're growing here, they have to be. They're - they're survivors."
A hand touches Carter’s shoulder. “Like you.”
