A slight story. One not to be rushed. I like Scout’s attempt to work out happiness and pain using a mixture of observation and external references but always testing her conclusions against her own experience. Not a bad model for learning.

I wondered if this would be too cute for me. It is cute but only in the sense that kittens are cute. We smile at them but the kittens do not find themselves amusing and, if we watch carefully, we can see in them the cat they will become and hear echoes of all the cats we have known and remember how they made us feel. This book is that kind of cute.
