I'm enjoying the story but Machado's footnotes are really aggravating me. They either tell the obvious (the river reflecting red is like blood? groundbreaking) or insert such a smarmy interpretation (if this isn't an orgasm, I don't know what is) that I'm irritated each time I come across one. (I unfortunately read too quickly to ignore them.) One even spoiled the entire book! Will have to buy another edition one day
