The world of the trial is a dark psychodrama. When Josef is in the law offices of the prosecutors, he is smothered and weak, lacking in willpower. When he is at his office, he finds the two guards in a junk closet, getting beaten by a flogger. It’s odd enough that they are at the office in the first place, but when they appear to be in this closet purely for his exhibition, it becomes otherworldly.

Pretty early on my feel of Kafka is that The Trial is born out of the paranoia of feeling disassociated from your fellow human beings. Josef has no knowledge of why he ought to be arrested and maintains his own innocence, understanding that acknowledging or entertaining his potential guilt is the key to guilt settling upon him. The worst thing we see him up to is his Indiscretions in courting Fraulein Burstner.

these are real events for Josef but I feel that they are also highly metaphorical parallels to the thought pattern of a person who feels first their judgement and second guilt over the consequences of his actions. The guard episode may be entirely real, or Josef K could be absolutely imagining it and the scream is his at his runaway imagination of the fate of the guards that he declaims. It is telling that Josef is content to leave them in the closet and, later, purge them from his consciousness entirely. He seems to recuse himself of any responsibility in the affair.

people wonder what the trial is necessarily about as Josef is never explicitly told. What we have is a growing parade of female figures in his life. There is a young woman who may moonlight as a prostitute; his flatmate, Fraulein Burstner; there is the young wife in the apartment where the trial is held; there is the woman in the law offices; there is Josef’s cousin, Erna; and now Leni, the young nurse of the lawyer that Josef’s uncle takes him to see.
like, what’s suspect: Josef is pushy, to say the least, with his attractive flatmate. he is not discerning or discretionary with the way in which he is attempting to make love to Burstner. He is risking her reputation, but he does not consider this in the moment. A few story beats later, when he visits the apartment of the trial and the man’s wife is throwing herself at him, he is VERY into it and then VERY upset when the court assistant abducts her, not because of her position (which she is kind of “aw shucks” about) but because he was hoping to fuck her, but he won’t, and someone else will.
