well this story took an odd turn

this book is trying to do way too much in under 400 pages

this is such an odd book because objectively the world-building and writing style on a line level are lovely and really well done....but the characters are lacking and the plot is kind of uninteresting....and i think if this was like a first book in a series maybe i'd be more forgiving but it's a standalone from what i can tell....hmmm.....

the plot on this is just. not that interesting.

gotta hand it to lark, she is crafty

gotta say, i do respect a female lead who just refuses to engage with the conflict being dished out by the narrative. it isn't going to work, but i respect the avoidance for sure. best of luck lark, you're fucked!

unfortunately i can see why so many of the reviews say that there is zero emotional connection with these characters and i am worried this is going to be a snoozefest
