kinda hard to believe they let me read this in 8th grade for my summer reading project. this shit is so demoralizing, and on some level i was just like those kids in Juniors. I understood what was happening in a slightly removed way, like a dream, and reading this back as an adult I’m full of this sense of impending dread that gets heavier and heavier with each page.

I’m not sure why I decided to reread this super depressing book. I’ve been meaning to read it as an adult because the last time I read it I was probably 13. Now I’m 34.

this is precisely why i haven’t read it yet. this and “a little life” by hanya yanagihara and “on earth were briefly gorgeous” by ocean vuong. vuongs poetry is beautiful but so devastating that i think his prose would kill me
