The real historical characters like Churchill, Lawrence of Arabia and Gertrude Bell are mixed with a fictional character, Agnes, who despite her 40 years of age and outspoken politics, is so naive in relationships is almost laughable.

This is different from her previous book, A Thread of Grace, which I liked a lot. This one takes us to Egypt post WWI and the Great Influenza.

Historical context: Just as WWI is ending the epidemic of Spanish Flu takes hold and kills more people than the war did.
