The Body: 4 stars
The amazing storytelling and writing continues! Interesting tie-ins to other stories by King, including but not limited to Shawshank Redemption. Very excited to watch the film adaptation, which somehow I’ve gotten to age 38 without watching but about which everyone always raves.

This story was so good up until it went for the cheap laughs using toilet humor 🤢 but I guess we are in the mind of a 13yo boy so I’ll forgive it.

What in the hell did I just read?! I raced to finish this just now because yesterday I was too scared to sleep in case I got nightmares. So twisted and creepy and dark, which I guess is King’s MO, but not mine. I do think the story was brilliantly executed, and I liked the beginning a lot, but once the animal abuse started and escalated from there I’d had enough. Good riddance, onto the next!

Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption: 5 stars
What. A. Masterpiece. Having seen (and loved) the movie, I was able to pick up on the foreshadowing while still finding it hard to put this novella down. The adaptation was brilliant and stayed true to the source material, but I’ll give the edge to the book for the writing, plot, and wonderful characters. Can’t wait to see what the next “season” has in store!
