No woman has captivated me the way Lizzie Eustace does. She haunts my waking moments with her cavalier, messy living. She is the Odysseus of English literature. The teller of tales.
Trollope has fallen prey to the time-old tradition of pitting two women against each other. Why would you say Lucy is humble and kind and well-learned but not as beautiful as Lizzie? And that to be said by her own fiancé? Unnecessary.
