Donatella’s mouth fell open.
“Who is this hussy?”
“I’m his fiancée.”
“No. I’m his fiancée!” Donatella’s cheeks burned brighter, and then she lunged forward, as if to rip Evangeline’s hand from Jacks’s leg.
Jacks stopped Donatella in one lighting-quick move, grabbing her wrist. “Do. Not. Touch. Her.”

“Who told you that having the black jack means you win?”
“I don’t understand why you’re upset. You won.”
“I’m not heartless. My heart just doesn’t work very well. And while I do take pleasure in a lot of things that would probably appall you, I take no delight in beating people who have no idea what they’re doing.”

“Are you certain that lump of hair actually knows how to play?”
“You don’t have to insult him.”
“I just want to make sure you’re clear on all the rules. I would never insult the love of your life. Although I’m the first to admit I have a twisted idea of love, but I do believe that a groom who abandons his bride on their wedding day deserves to be insulted.”

“Do you know how to play blackjack?”
“Of course. Luc and I play cards a lot.”

“If I lose, I still want you to save everyone who was at the wedding. I’m willing to sacrifice my life, but I’m not going to bet it away if there’s a chance it will all be for nothing. I’m more valuable than that.”

“I never said I want to kiss you. I want to see if you’re willing to bet your life to save your friends and family. If you can do that, then I’ll play your little game.”

“You’ll have to watch and see,” said the fae. “Just hope she doesn’t run out of time . . .”

“I’m not actually a Fate,” Chaos corrected, speaking over her, and then suddenly they were face-to-face, looking at each other in the way that Evangeline had been looking at impostor Jacks.
“Why don’t you just bite her and get it over with,” Ja ks growled at Chaos.

“You really don’t hope for anything? What gets you up in the morning?”
“I have difficulty sleeping.”
