SUMMARY: 9000 years in the future, the smartest mathematician on Trantor, Hari Seldon, was exiled and sent to Terminus, where he created the Foundation. On Terminus, there are no metals, so, the greatest minds in the galaxy meet up and use the area as scientific research or as a peaceful haven. Meanwhile, a man named Pierre is writing his encyclopedia, but a religious conflict gets the Foundation tangled in a mess.

The main conflict in Foundation is character vs. society. "It is unfortunate, but true. The Commission has been more and more hostile to his activities." (Asimov, 23) This shows that the conflict of this book is character vs. society because Hari Seldon, a famous mathematician and historian is being arrested and later exiled by the society of Trantor because of his activities and projects he conducts in the college.
