Oh no, I don't like this. The mother has had bouts of sickness and now says her knees know when there's a chance of rain and one of the MCs dismisses her because she doesn't have arthritis? I don't have that diagnosis either and my knees have been bad since I was a kid, they feel like giant lollipops with a barometric drop!

Tense change in one sentence, it's really clunky.
Also so far I'm interested in the story but there's so much exposition I'm not sure I'm keeping up. Was really looking forward to this one!
