Ch1— The expansion of Rome ceased under Augustus, whose rule became one of moderation and glory by means other than conquest; and this moderation continued by the impetus of fear under his successors.

An old myth states that the God Terminus, the God of Boundaries, refused to bow before Jupiter; which augers read as a divine declaration that Rome’s power should never retract, decline, or fall.

The decline and fall of Rome, according to the Introduction, can be attributed to both the loss of virtue, and the spread of Christianity, which wore the face of Rome whilst eradicating its pantheon in favour of a monotheistic state religion. The date of Rome’s end is up for debate. Some historians give it as that of closure of Plato’s Academy by Justinian(?).
