I was absolutely not expecting the Tale of the Spaniard to take up basically half the book, and I'm relieved that now I'm on a different storyline, but wow. This is a struggle.

So far my take on this hews pretty closely to the orthodoxy: a handful of great moments, ideas, and turns of phrase embedded in an ocean of tedium. I hope things pick up a bit once the Spaniard is done nattering on... too bad I asked some friends of mine to read this with me in a book club! Gulp!
